Michigan’s head coach search has reached Kyle Whittingham, and reports suggest a deal is about to be finalized soon. He was previously the head coach of the Utah Utes from 2005 to 2025. Earlier this month, Whittingham stepped down from the role.
Whittingham is the all-time leader in wins for the Utes and is highly revered for his coaching style and culture-building. Is Kyle Whittingham exactly what Michigan needs? Paun Finebaum thinks so.
During a recent appearance on ESPN’s Get Up, Finebaum was asked for his thoughts on Whittingham possibly joining Michigan. He said that, considering where the program is currently, after all the Sherrone Moore drama, Whittingham would be a “pretty significant hire.”
What sets Whittingham apart in Finebaum’s eyes is his incredible record, 177-88 in 21 years, but more importantly, his ability to build a culture in a program. Those are the qualities that Michigan is in dire need of.
“You talk about culture, what program in America needs somebody who is strong in culture than the University of Michigan. So I think more than anything else, he brings respect back to a program that has lost almost all of it,” Finebaum said.
Michigan has been through a lot over the last few months with everything that Moore did on and off the field. Whittingham, if hired, would bring stability to a program that hasn’t known peace for months now.
As per a report by Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel of ESPN, the university’s top officials will be presented with a deal with Whittingham on Friday. If everything goes well there, a final offer will be made shortly after.

Michigan Needs to Hire Kyle Whittingham Urgently
While Michigan has been through one of their roughest phases, it can become even worse in the next few weeks. The program has a bad reputation right now, and that might motivate players to leave in the upcoming transfer portal window.
The portal opens up on January 2nd, so the university officials need to be careful about that. If the players think that there’s no stability or even the signs of it in the near future, they might take their talent elsewhere.
Wetzel outlined the same problem on ESPN and stated that timing will be very crucial for Michigan in the next week. If they don’t present a viable option to their players and staff, they might start looking outside for better opportunities, which will inevitably destroy the program.
