Kirby Smart Pulls No Punches as Georgia Squad Gets Reality Check on Portal Announcements

Kirby Smart is no fan of the publicity that the transfer portal gets this time of the year. For him, the offseason should be about trying to improve and get better ahead of the next season. The Georgia coach said as much in his latest press conference, ahead of the Bulldogs’ Sugar Bowl quarterfinal against Ole Miss.

At a point in the coach’s College Football Playoff press conference, he spoke about roster management, with the transfer portal at full throttle. Here’s what he said:

“Everybody’s announcing what they’re doing. I’m announcing that I’m going in the portal. I’m announcing that I’m re-signing. How about you announce that you’re getting better and you’re going to practice…?”

Smart also said that he always viewed December as the month of most progress for players, and that he believed that college football players should focus on that above announcing that they’re joining the transfer portal.

Of course, December isn’t exactly the “offseason” for the Bulldogs. The Athens program is in the midst of a national title run, which starts with the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day.
