Alabama has finally decided that Ty Simpson will be the team’s starting quarterback in the upcoming season under Kalen DeBoer. After Alabama missed the College Football Playoffs last season, the stakes are high for legendary coach Nick Saban’s successor in his second season with the program.
On3’s Pete Nakos shared on Monday, August 11, that Simpson has edged out Austin Mack and Keelon Russell for the QB1 position.

But if the announcement was supposed to inspire confidence, the reaction from rival fan bases suggested the opposite. Within minutes, rival fans made sarcastic remarks in response.
“Honk If You Sacked Simpson,” another fan added.
One fan wrote, “Are Keelon Russell and Austin Mack choosing to sit out? What’s going on… Simpson couldn’t beat out Milroe in how many years? 😐”
Mort (@mortyripz): “Sack man is coming for you, lil bro. Noles by 50 🍢,” another fan reacted.
“Well, every team needs a weak link,” one fan wrote.
Rando (@brnraccount001) said, “He’s like a cute little mini version of LaNorris Sellers.”
“I heard they call him ‘Ty,’ because a tie is like kissing your sister,” one fan trolled Simpson.
Even Tennessee fans got in on the trolling, with one writing “Thank you. TN fan.”

What did Kalen DeBoer say about Ty Simpson at the SEC Media Days?
It was no surprise to learn that Ty Simpson will finally get his chance to shine under the bright lights of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Simpson was backing up Jalen Milroe last season, and entering this offseason, it was believed by many that he would eventually be named the starting quarterback.
Even coach Kalen DeBoer sang his praises at the SEC Media Days, highlighting what makes Simpson stand above everyone else.
“Ty is an accurate passer,” DeBoer said in July. “He throws a catchable ball, and I think that’s so key. Whether it’s down the field, whether it’s crossing routes, quick outs, or comebacks? I mean, he throws a catchable ball, one that’s easy to receive as a receiver. You can throw it hard, you can throw it soft, and it doesn’t mean it’s always easy to catch. And so, he does that.”
Simpson was a five-star recruit coming out of Martin High School. He was recruited by Alabama, where he has waited for three years before finally getting the chance to go out there and prove himself as the QB1.
