Josh Heupel has become a well-known figure in college football as the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. Heupel joined the Volunteers in 2021, but his coaching career started back in 2004 when he joined his alma mater, Oklahoma, as a graduate assistant.
Outside of a glowing reputation as the head coach of Tennessee program, he has a close-knit family that mostly stays away from the limelight. So, let’s take a deep dive into a lesser known aspect of coach Heupel’s life, his family life.

Meet Josh Heupel’s Family
Josh Heupel is married to Dawn Heupel. The two first met as teenagers at Aberdeen Central High School in South Dakota. Dawn was also an athlete in her younger years, playing basketball and volleyball before later earning a degree in architecture. She has kept a private life while supporting her husband’s coaching career.
“I want to take this time to thank my wife Dawn, my copilot in life,” Heupel once SAID about his wife, as per fanbuzz. “She’s probably piloting most of the time when I’m at the office.”
Josh and Dawn are parents to two children, a daughter named Hannah and a son named Jace. Hannah is into dance, piano, and art, and she also plays a variety of sports such as basketball, volleyball, golf, and tennis.
Jace has followed a path in team sports. He has played baseball, football, and basketball, while also spending time with golf and swimming.
Coach Heupel’s father, Ken Heupel, was a football coach who spent time leading programs at the high school and college level. The highlight of his career was being the head football coach at Northern State University. His father’s time in football made him fall in love with the sport.
“Truly, from the time I can remember, it was riding to training camp with my dad (Ken, head coach at Northern State University in Aberdeen) at 5:30 in the morning,” Heupel said during an interview with UCF. “It’s pitch-dark out everywhere…me falling asleep once I got myself into the car and waking up on the ride over.”
“Serving Tang out of the cooler for breakfast…working in the equipment room. I can’t imagine a better childhood. I absolutely loved it.”
His mother, Cindy Heupel, worked in education and was a high school principal. She passed away in May 2024. Heupel also has a sister, Andrea. She is married to Dan Boren, a former U.S. Representative from Oklahoma.
