Joel Klatt Casts Shadow Over Steve Sarkisian’s Texas’ Playoff Chances Amid Potential 9–3 Season in 2025

Steve Sarkisian’s Texas Longhorns’ path to the College Football Playoff is dicey. With two games remaining and holding a 7-3 record, the Longhorns may already be out of the playoff race. The Longhorns’ best chances would be to finish 9-3 overall, which would require them to beat unranked Arizona and No. 3 Texas A&M.

On Wednesday, Joel Klatt talked about the Longhorns’ chances for the playoffs. He broke down every possible assessment thought that the College Football Playoff Committee might use before deciding if Texas deserves a spot in the 12-team playoff field.

“I think they’re more done than they have a path,” Klatt said.

In his preview, Klatt started with that no team with three losses has ever reached the playoffs. He also mentioned that their upcoming games might not be enough to boost their resume to such a measure that ensures them a spot in the CFP.

“They play Arkansas. That team is two and eight—that’s not going to help their résumé at all. But then they play A&M, and obviously that would. A&M’s not number one in the country, but they are number three in the country. And right now, number 10 Alabama is the last team receiving an at-large spot. So that’s a lot of ground to make up,” Klatt added.

After that, Klatt dissected Texas’ important games and their three losses, which came Ohio State, Florida and Georgia.

“Their best win is Oklahoma, that’s a neutral site,” Klatt said. “Their other best win is Vandy. Okay. I’m looking at this, and you have to consider that, yes, they have the three losses, but they also have two really suspect wins, overtime versus two of the worst teams in the SEC. You look up, and that’s not a great résumé, folks.”

Joel Klatt Shuts Down Texas’ Potential Advance Into CFP

Finally, Joel Klatt pointed out that, looking at all angles, Texas has barely any chance to make it to the playoffs even if they win their remaining two games. They don’t get in through the ‘eye test’ or the ‘resume.’

“That team has yet to play a four-quarter game,” Klatt said. “If this committee values the eye test, I don’t think Texas gets in on the eye test. If the committee somehow turns a new page and they start saying, ‘You know what, we’re not going to deal with this—we’re just going to go on résumé,’ they’re going to lose the résumé battle as well. So for me, the Texas path is much more dicey. I just don’t see it for them, even with a win over A&M.”

It appears that after making two straight College Football Playoff semifinals, Steve Sarkisian’s Texas will miss out this season.
