Iowa vs. Iowa State Rivalry: All-Time Results, Cy-Hawk Trophy Meaning, and More

What is the Cy-Hawk Trophy and just how dominant have the Iowa Hawkeyes been against their in-state Iowa State Cyclones in the Cy-Hawk Series?

One of the nation’s top rivalries in essentially every sport, the annual battle between the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones takes the nation by storm. The two football teams battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy and year-long bragging rights.

The history behind the game and the all-time results are below.

    What Is the Cy-Hawk Trophy?

The trophy, awarded to the victor of the annual Iowa vs. Iowa State rivalry game, has gone through historic changes. Until 2010, it featured a running back performing a stiff arm and likeness of both Cy the Cardinal and Herky the Hawk, the school’s mascots.

However, during the Iowa State Fair in 2011, a new trophy was presented. The new trophy featured a sculpture depicting a family with children huddled around a basket of corn. It was described ‘a work of art that represents Iowans and their hard work.’

To say the trophy was met with criticism would be an understatement.

Just four days after its release, it was announced that the trophy would be replaced and changed following negative fan reactions. The 2012 game saw a new trophy debuted following Iowa State’s victory, featuring the mascots of both universities, a raised football, and a background of corn.

All-Time Iowa vs. Iowa State Results

Dating back to 1894, the Iowa vs. Iowa State Rivalry has seen these two historic programs battle it out on the gridiron. Iowa leads the all-time series 47-24, while they also own the longest win streak, largest victory, but not the most recent victory which Iowa State owns following their 20-19 come-from-behind victory in Week 2 of 2024.

Despite starting their rivalry back in 1894, petty differences got in the way in 1934 when phone calls were not returned by then Iowa head coach Ossie Solem. They didn’t schedule the game again until 1977, providing a sizeable gap in the annual results.
