Iowa State vs. Iowa Game Preview
The Hawkeyes and Cyclones will meet for the 71st time on Saturday, with Iowa bringing a 47–23 overall series record to the game. The series began in 1894 but took a break from 1934 to 1977. With the game’s revival, the Cy-Hawk Trophy was created and has become a staple ever since.
The Cyclones will enter the contest having lost seven of the last eight meetings against the Hawkeyes. Nevertheless, they are coming off a 21-3 win over North Dakota last week.
Iowa State brings 18 returning starters from one of the youngest rosters in college football in 2023 — nine on each side of the ball. In terms of production, the Cyclones return quarterback Rocco Becht as the starter.
Becht was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and completed 76% of his passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns in the matchup against North Dakota on Saturday. Defensively, the Cyclones allowed a 72 to 48 play disparity to their FCS foe, something that will undoubtedly be under the microscope for the game against Iowa.
Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes debuted a new offense with the arrival of Tim Lester as offensive coordinator and racked up 492 yards of offense in doing so. Quarterback Cade McNamara went 21-31 with 251 yards and three touchdowns, and Iowa added 241 yards on the ground against Illinois State.
The traditionally stingy Iowa defense forced three turnovers and allowed just 189 yards of offense in the first season-opener shutout since 2005.

This game will pit a young, hungry Iowa State squad against the tried and true steely defensive prowess of the Hawkeyes. The Cyclones will look to improve on getting off the field, which they struggled with last week. Iowa, meanwhile, will see if it can throw together a full-game performance offensively after a slow start in the first half.
As always, when it comes to a rivalry game. the unexpected somehow finds a way to show up, and this matchup should be one for the ages.
