In today’s world, F1 teams are always looking to one up each other when it comes to marketing and optics. One of the biggest opportunities they receive to do so is at the beginning of a new season, when they get the chance to reveal their new liveries. And over time, there have been a few incredibly innovative ways teams have looked to unveil their brand new machines.
The livery reveal season ahead of the 2026 season has officially began, this time already in January. This is because ahead of a new regulations era, the first preseason test is commencing on Jan. 26, followed by two more tests in February, to give the teams a good chance to test their new cars. This got us thinking about some of the most unique ways F1 teams have revealed their new liveries in the past.
So here are some of the most innovative ways teams have launched their new cars
5 of the Most Innovative Car Launches in F1 History
McLaren MP4-12, 1997
In 1997, McLaren was moving away from its famous Marlboro title sponsor, and away from the red and white livery as a result. Now, the British team featured West as its new primary sponsor, with a silver and white livery.
To mark this shift in identity, the team organized a huge event to reveal its 1997 car in February of that year, inviting pop icons The Spice Girls to perform at a concert, with the MP4-12 in the background. This marks one of the most innovative ways a team has ever launched a new car in F1 history.
Benetton B201, 2001
To mark its final year in F1 after over 15 years in the sport, Benetton went all out for the B197’s launch. The team, which was based out of Britain but had Italian ownership, decided to reveal its 2001 challenger at the famous Piazza San Marco at Venice.
It has been reported that the team spent close to $500,000 on the launch, that also featured drivers Jenson Button and Giancarlo Fisichella, alongside test drivers Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso.
Benetton, led by Flavio Briatore, was then acquired by Renault, who were already the engine providers for the team, and the French automobile giants entered the F1 field as a works team in 2002.
McLaren MP4-26, 2011
Making another entry onto the list, McLaren again found an innovative way to launch its 2011 challenger, the MP4-26. The Woking-based team arrived at the Potsdamer Platz at the Berlin city centre, and built its car in front of the fans.
What sounds strange was a smooth process that allowed fans to be involved in bringing different elements of the car together, with drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton also adding the finishing touches.
Ferrari SF1000, 2020
Moving away from standard launch events, Scuderia Ferrari tapped into the rich history of the Italian peninsula with the launch of its 2020 car. The Maranello-based outfit organized a full-fledged opera prior to the launch of the SF1000 at the historic Teatro Municipale theater in Reggio Emilia, Italy.
F1 75 Launch, 2025
Finally, the glamorous F1 75 Launch ahead of the 2025 season takes the final spot on this list. The one-off event organized by the Formula One Group brought all 10 teams on the grid together on one stage to reveal their cars at the O2 theater in London.
The event took place to celebrate 75 years of the F1 championship which began all the way back in 1950. This show gave each team an opportunity to reveal their cars in their own unique ways, while bringing the F1 drivers onto a red carpet for a show hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall.
While it divided opinion among the fans, it was a welcome break from the regular car launches for many onlookers.
