Will Max Duggan Get To Make a Play in UFL for the St. Louis Battlehawks?

Max Duggan made headlines in college football back in 2022, guiding TCU to the National Championship game. He racked up 3,698 passing yards and 32 touchdowns that season. On the ground, he added 423 yards and nine scores. Despite his college records, the NFL didn’t make a call for him in the 2023 draft.

Duggan signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as a free agent but only lingered on their practice squad. Now, he’s with the Battlehawks, aiming to make his mark in the UFL.

The team’s depth chart, however, casts some doubts. Manny Wilkins sits atop the quarterback list as QB 5. Duggan follows as QB 14, placed as the backup. A former Arizona State star, Wilkins brings pro experience from the XFL and NFL practice squads. Coach Anthony Becht seems to favor that seasoning for the opener.

However, Duggan’s chances of seeing action aren’t zero. Duggan might get the nod if Wilkins falters with turnovers or stalls against Houston’s defense. An injury to Wilkins would also thrust him into the spotlight.

Duggan’s mobility could carve out a niche role. At TCU, he thrived scrambling and punching in goal-line runs. The Battlehawks might sprinkle in plays to make use of that skill, especially near the end zone.

The offense features weapons like running back Frank Darby and receivers Jahcour Pearson and Juwann Manigo. They could smooth Duggan’s transition if he’s called up. For now, Duggan’s debut hinges on the game’s twists. He’s not the starter, but don’t count him out, as he still has a chance to make a play in the game.
