“There Needs To Be A Cleansing”: Former OSU National Champ Makes Feelings Very Clear On Sherrone Moore Scandal At Michigan

Sherrone Moore’s scandal is by far the most sordid story to come out of college football in 2025. Not only did he get dismissed by the school for having an improper relationship with a staffer, but he was then arrested by local police for breaking into Paige Shiver’s home. He’s now facing up to six years in prison, and while he has been released on bail, he faces very tough restrictions.

That’s not the only issue the University of Michigan has had to deal with recently concerning its football program; there’s the sign-stealing scandal from 2023 under Jim Harbaugh, and the COVID-19 recruitment violations that saddled them with NCAA penalties earlier this season. Suffice to say, many in the sport believe that a cleansing of the Wolverines football program was long overdue.

Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was one of those who believed that the program required cleansing and that Kyle Whittingham is exactly the man to bring order to Ann Arbor.

“There needs to be a cleansing at Michigan, and (Kyle) is the guy to do it,” said Meyer on the “Triple Option Podcast” this Tuesday

Meyer has probably followed Whittingham’s work closely, as the latter is the one who took over the Utah Utes after the former left after a couple of successful seasons in 2003 and 2004. Meyer went on to win a couple of national championships at Florida in his next job.

    Kyle Whittingham’s Priority? Roster Retention

It seems like Kyle Whittingham is clear that his priority coming into Ann Arbor is crisis management. Speaking in his press conference as the Wolverines’ head coach, he was asked what his main priority was:

“Roster retention. You have to meet with these young men. In this day and age in college football, Transfer Portal is opening up in about five days. That is absolutely job one, is to make sure that you get a chance to get in front of these young men and tell them what I’m all about, find out what they’re all about. And that would go for the incoming recruits as well.”

Understandably, he would focus on this, even as other programs focus on getting prospects through the transfer portal. Sherrone Moore’s scandal rocked the program to the core, and it’s no surprise that some players could lose some faith in the school. This is exactly the kind of human touch people like Urban Meyer hope Whittingham can bring to stabilize Michigan.
