Missouri has secured its head coach, Eli Drinkwitz, from entering the coaching carousel next week. Amid Florida job rumors, Drinkwitz and Missouri have agreed to a new six-year contract extension, locking him in through the 2031 season. The University of Missouri Board of Curators unanimously came to this decision.
As per the new contract, Drinkwitz’s salary will jump to $10.75 million per season. For the 2025 season, he was earning $9 million and now in 2026, he will earn $10.25 million. On top of that, Drinkwitz will also get resources for assistants and NIL-related expenses.
Pete Thamel shared the development on X, writing:
“Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz has agreed to a new contract with the school, he announced. Per ESPN sources, there’s an increase in salary for Drinkwitz to an average of more than $10.7 million over the deal and an increased commitment to staff and salary pool.”

Several fans reacted to this decision. Some expressed their surprise behind Missouri’s decision.
“11M to never beat a ranked team 😭” one fan said it bluntly.
“This isn’t a story about football; it’s a perfect microcosm of our institutional priorities. We’re celebrating a deal where one employee now makes 100x the salary of the brilliant faculty and staff who actually educate the students and run the university,” one fan added.
“It took Saban winning like three NCs to get his first $10M per year deal. Now we just hand that kind of money to coaches who can keep their programs relevant,” another fan commented.
“0M+ a year to win no ranked games is nuts… congrats mizzou💀” one fan said.
There were also sarcastic reactions from LSU and Florida fans, who will breathe a sigh of relief of not having to see their program sign Drinkwitz.
“Lockered LSU and Florida lmaoo,” another fan added.
“But Florida fans told me he was coming to LSU?” one fan asked.
“LSU fans are breathing a sigh of relief rn,” another wrote.

Why Missouri Locked Eli Drinkwitz?
Under Eli Drinkwitz, Missouri has found a home in the most competitive college football conference, the SEC. He took the Missouri job in 2020 and has led them to a 45-28 record. This includes six straight bowl-eligible seasons.
Notably, Missouri has registered back-to-back double-digit win seasons in 2023 and 2024. This year, the program is 7-4 overall, while 3-4 in the SEC. His resume also includes a major bowl victory vs. Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
This way, the Tigers felt it’d be best not to let Eli Drinkwitz sign with another program.
