Delaware State made a home run hire this offseason by selecting DeSean Jackson to fill its head coaching vacancy.

DeSean Jackson’s HBCU Mega Camp Marks New Era for the Delaware State Hornets

The “mega camp” saw Delaware State and Jackson host over 400 high school recruits to campus, showing Jackson wants to make a solid impact on the program.

Hiring an NFL legend as head coach is a great move for the Hornets. Recruiting can become easier when high school athletes have a chance to play for a guy like Jackson, who has succeeded in every facet of the game.

“HBCU Gameday,” which is a network that covers HBCU football, was in attendance at the camp and was able to speak with Jackson about the camp.

Jackson sees the camp as a way to inspire the community, saying, “It’s a blessing for me, my coaching staff, and we just want to keep continuing to inspire these young dudes.”

Jackson spoke on the impact he hopes to have on the community. But he also talked about how building relationships can help with recruiting some of the best talent in Delaware.

“I think in general there’s a lot of talent in the area, and we don’t want to miss any talent in this area,” Jackson said. “We’re going to keep encouraging our coaching staff and our players to build that gap from that community and our alumni, and just players in general in the area. We definitely have to continue to outreach.”

The Hornets will desperately need Jackson to bring in talent to Delaware State. The team finished with an abysmal 1-11 record in 2024 and has not won more than five games in a season since 2012.

It’s a tall task to turn around a program that has been so historically bad. If there’s someone that can do it, then it would be Jackson, who is already bringing a new swag to the university through things like this “mega camp.”
