Relationship with his players has always been a priority close to Deion Sanders, but one choice in particular has been hard to live with. In a candid moment that was captured in Say What Needs To Be Said on Youtube, Sanders gave a reason as to why he could not attend the marriage of his former star, Travis Hunter.
“So I had to tell him like, ‘Dude, I can’t come. I apologize.’” He said. (6:11)
Sanders revealed that he was undergoing bladder cancer surgery, which did not allow him to attend the event. In the interview, he mentioned that he had talked to Hunter himself because he felt he owed him an explanation.
Hunter, of course, understood and found that grace in his response at once.
“he’s like, ‘I’ll be there.’” Hunter replied. (6:17)
It is a vulnerability that Sanders does not exhibit very often, but never avoids. He also emphasized the fact that illness makes you make choices that have emotional consequences.
Travis Hunter, the 2024 Heisman winner, has been close to Sanders, and the coach regrets that such a move left things unsaid. The meaning goes beyond sports – it is about legacy, accountability, and the post-recovery issues.
Many indeed forgot about Coach Prime not being in attendance at Hunter’s wedding. To Sanders, it was a loss that he did not anticipate.
”because I couldn’t put these two bags full of blood and everything hide,” he said. (6:05)
Hunter did not speak publicly against Sanders, and he has always been loyal. Sanders admitted that he did not inform most of his family about his cancer diagnosis to avoid hurting them and enable them to concentrate on their professional football careers.

What’s Next for Deion Sanders: A Return To Leadership
Sanders is now officially cancer-free following surgery and reconstructive work to his bladder and is getting ready to be back on the Colorado sidelines this fall (AP News). The Colorado Buffaloes are expected to start their 2025 season on August 29, playing against Georgia Tech, and Sanders will be at the helm of the team, and be without his sons for the first time in his college coaching career.
However, in addition to strategizing the script of the game next year, Sanders seems to be scripting his script. In between moments of reconciliation lost and truths that are difficult to swallow, he is still very much in faith and hope of the future. His union with his family, players, and religion has been an example of how coaches can lead beyond wins and losses.
