Head coach Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks had a great 2024 season. The team was undefeated in the regular season and went on to win the Big Ten Championship with a victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions.
However, they did not stay undefeated in the college football playoff, losing in the quarterfinals to the eventual National Champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes. While it was a disappointing end to the season, it was still a step in the right direction for Lanning and his squad.

Oregon Invests in Dan Lanning in a Large Amended Contract
On Thursday morning, insider Ross Dellenger reported that the Ducks and Lanning had agreed to a contract restructuring. His new deal increases his annual pay by $2 million and will run for the next six seasons.
“Oregon and Dan Lanning have agreed on an amended 6-year contract that increases his annual pay by $2 million, sources tell Yahoo Sports. The fully-guaranteed deal averages nearly $11M annually – a significant investment by the university putting the 38-year old top 5 nationally.”

However, Dellenger also reported that his buyout is unchanged from the previous deal and that the deal will not be officially approved by the Oregon board of directors until Friday.
“Lanning’s buyout in the amended contract remains unchanged from the previous deal. If he leaves, he owes $20 million. The new amendment needs board approval Friday. Lanning has gone 35-6 in three seasons since AD Rob Mullens hired him as a first-time head coach in his mid-30s.”
Lanning and the Ducks will be looking to improve on their 2024 season in 2025. After a great season in 2024, the team will be looking for greater postseason success.
For that to happen, the team will need to adapt to the loss of Heisman finalist QB Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel is entering the 2025 NFL Draft after completing his final season of NCAA eligibility.

With Gabriel gone, Dante Moore is expected to take over the starting job. Moore was the backup to Gabriel this past season, only appearing in four games. In those games, he completed seven of eight passes for 49 yards.
Moore was a transfer from UCLA. He transferred from the Bruins after starting in 2023. He chose to switch to a more prestigious school and give up a starting position so that he could develop in a better program. In 2025, the Ducks will see if their investment in Moore was worth the effort.
