Why Is the College World Series Played in Omaha?

The NCAA Men’s College World Series (CWS) has been associated with Omaha, Nebraska, since 1950. As we approach the 75th anniversary in 2025, it’s worth looking into the reasons for this long-standing alliance and the city’s persistent support for college baseball.

Here’s Why the College World Series Is Always Held in Omaha

The adventure began in the late 1940s when Omaha Mayor Johnny Rosenblatt and local business leaders envisioned hosting significant baseball tournaments in the city. Their efforts resulted in the establishment of Omaha Municipal Stadium (later renamed Rosenblatt Stadium), which served as the CWS’s home for decades.

This program not only drew national attention to Omaha but also cultivated a strong communal commitment to the sport.

Omaha’s commitment to the CWS is reflected in its ongoing attempts to improve the event’s experience. In 2011, the city presented Charles Schwab Field Omaha, a cutting-edge stadium with a seating capacity of 24,505, expandable to 35,000.

This contemporary facility, which replaced Rosenblatt Stadium, assured Omaha’s status as the premier college baseball destination.

The CWS contributes greatly to Omaha’s economy. In 2024 alone, the event produced around $115 million in revenue. Beyond the economic benefits, the series promotes community interaction, with local people and businesses actively hosting teams and fans nationwide.

Unlike other major sporting events that shift venues, the CWS’s persistent presence in Omaha ensures predictability for both fans and teams. This consistency allows for better planning and has established a legacy in Omaha, where June is synonymous with collegiate baseball.

The 2025 CWS celebrates its 75th anniversary in Omaha. A multitude of events are planned to honor this “diamond anniversary,” including citywide decorations, a traveling sculpture tour, and a major celebration on Omaha’s riverfront with live music and fireworks.

In addition, for the first time, the University of Nebraska at Omaha will co-host with Creighton University, underlining the city’s common pride in hosting the event.

Omaha’s reputation as a perennial host of the College World Series reflects the city’s community spirit, dedication to tradition, and passion for the game.

As the city celebrates 75 years of hosting the CWS, it continues to demonstrate how a community can embrace and enhance a sporting event, incorporating it into its unique identity.
