2025 MLB Draft Projections: Will Florida State Pitcher Jamie Arnold Be the First Overall Pick?

MLB Draft prospect Jamie Arnold started making headlines while still a boy when he helped Tampa Jesuit High School win the 2022 5A state championship and was ranked the No. 4 left-handed pitcher in his home state of Florida.

During his three years of college baseball playing for the Florida State Seminoles, Arnold has done nothing but rise to an extraordinary level—so much so that his name is on the table among those who could receive the No. 1 pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.

Jamie Arnold’s Case as MLB Draft’s First Overall Pick

Jamie Arnold’s place as one of the top prospects in U.S. amateur baseball is more than supported by his results. His performance at the collegiate level includes a 3.63 ERA with 77 earned runs allowed in 191 innings. He has shown exquisite control, accumulating an astounding 265 strikeouts and only 68 walks.

The weakest part of his performance has been allowing too many hits (160); however, his WHIP is well above average (1.194). Overall, he is a very dominant pitcher with 17 wins and nine losses in 51 games for the Seminoles.

But Arnold’s most attractive quality, however, is his ability to improve. His progression has been quite remarkable, as can be seen in the following summary (using data from Baseball Reference).

Year W L ERA G GS H R ER HR BB SO WHIP
    2023 2 5 6.34 24 8 45 38 31 6 27 49 1.636
    2024 11 3 2.98 19 18 90 45 35 7 26 159 1.098
    2025 4 1 2.4 8 8 25 12 11 2 15 57 0.968

According to MLB Pipeline and MLB.com’s Jim Callis, Jamie Arnold is definitely one of the players in the class of 2025 who can be considered for the No. 1 pick.

“This is probably the easiest pick of the whole Draft that we’re going to do here,” Callis said recently on the Pipeline podcast.

“He’s a lefty, I think he’s going to get to the big leagues very quickly, he’s got plus stuff, he’s got at least solid control, he’s got a track record of performance. So this might be the only pick where I don’t sigh trying to figure out who I’m going to take.”

ESPN has Arnold as the No. 1 pick, while Pipeline has him at No. 3, behind two other top prospects, infielder Ethan Holiday and infielder Seth Hernandez.

However, the Washington Nationals, who will have the first pick next July, will have a lot of the weight in the question. Whether or not Arnold gets the first call in the draft will depend on what the franchise decides to prioritize.

But whether he does or not, it’s good for all MLB fans to remember this name because it will soon resonate at the highest level.
