Associate Head Coach Jason Kelly Leaks Info on Myles Patton’s ‘Deception’ That Contributed to Texas A&M Win Over LSU

Texas A&M picked up an important win in its recent three-game series against LSU, a direct rival in the SEC. The Aggies, currently ranked 14th in the conference, defeated the 4th-ranked Tigers 2-1.

The win rekindled Texas’ hopes of earning the final ticket to the SEC Championship. Michael Earley’s Aggies are currently tied with Kentucky and Mississippi State (10-14), but only one of the three will make the postseason.

    Texas A&M’s Secret Weapon

Not surprisingly, such an important result has received a lot of media attention. The hosts of the D1Baseball Podcast, for example, had nothing but praise for the Aggies, and in particular, the case of the pitcher who started the third game of the series for Texas, Myles Patton.

This is a player who has captured the interest of pundits and fans alike. One of the secrets to his success is that he gets a lot of soft contact, and Texas associate head coach Jason Kelly revealed how he does it.

So says Kendall Rogers on the latest edition of the “D1Baseball Podcast”:

“I was talking to JK, Jason Kelly, after the game, because, how in the hell does he [Myles Patton] get so much soft contact? and he’s like, ‘with the way he pitches and how quick his release is, there’s a little bit of deception there, where the hitter is kind of thinking twice about what pitch is coming and that, like, split second really helps him out.”

It has certainly paid off for Patton. On the season, he has three wins and three losses in 12 starts for the Aggies (63.2 innings), his ERA is 4.95, he has struck out 70 batters and walked just 14.

In the series finale against LSU, Patton pitched six innings as the starter, allowing four earned runs, six hits, and two walks. He struck out six and left the game with the Aggies trailing by two.

His reliever, Weston Moss, did not allow a walk over the final three innings to win his sixth game of the season.
