“Get a Darn First Down”: Coach Prime Lashes Out in Practice as Juju Lewis Rises to the Challenge

The latest practice clip coming out from the Colorado Buffaloes camp saw head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders erupt in frustration from exasperation over what he was witnessing from his team. Sanders is known for passionate coaching, and he didn’t hold anything back, addressing the team.

“If we don’t get it right we gonna turn it into conditioning,” said Sanders.

“We’re not going to get no penalties. We’re going to go on and off the dirt field.”

“It’s going to be only one specialty,” he continued.

“If I call punt team, it’s not going to be a punt-return team. Everything is full speed.”

The frustration reached its peak when Sanders delivered what would become the defining moment of the practice session.

“We gonna start this all over again. Get a darn first down!”

The veteran coach made an undeniable statement: they will not tolerate sloppy play in preparation for what will be a tough 2025 season. Sanders made it clear that practice intensity must be equal to game day expectations.

Meanwhile, freshman quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis listened to his coach and did just what was asked.

In the second half of that same practice video, Lewis was shown following Sanders’ directions. The highly touted signal-caller stepped into the pocket to complete a first-down conversion.

But Lewis wasn’t done showing his ability. Further practice film showed the Georgia native making a throw with surgical precision. He threw a pinpoint pass through a tiny window to land a completion to one of his teammates.

Colorado’s 2025 Quarterback Depth To See Through a Tough Big 12 Schedule

Lewis, who has reclassified from the 2026 class to join Colorado early, is in an extremely competitive quarterback battle all fall camp. Also in the mix is Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and Ryan Staub, each looking to replace the fallen NFL prospect, Shedeur Sanders.

Colorado comes into the 2025 season with great hopes after going 9-4 in 2025. However, replacing Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter with the NFL has left a significant void to fill.

The Buffaloes’ season opener against Georgia Tech is already sold out, indicative of the continued excitement around the program under Sanders. The tough Big 12 schedule will see if the improved roster depth has the ability to keep the gained momentum going for a third consecutive season.
