CFB Analyst Highlights “Urgency” That Michigan Needs After Jim Harbaugh’s Exit

Michigan's response to a down year in 2024 received praise from analyst JD PicKell.

The Michigan Wolverines did not have a strong 2024 season after winning the national championship in 2023. The team saw big changes, as quarterback JJ McCarthy left for the NFL and head coach Jim Harbaugh departed after coaching the team since 2015.

A season later, NFL analyst JD PicKell is praising Michigan’s urgency.

Michigan Gaining Recognition for Refusing To Settle

After winning a national championship in 2023, Michigan’s poor 2024 season could be forgiven, especially considering the changes the Wolverines underwent.

However, the management group is not resting on its laurels. Instead, it has gone out and brought in one of the best recruiting classes of the year, something PicKell spoke about this on Thursday.

“If we’re being real, if I’m an Alabama fan, this is how I’d want us to respond after Saban’s retirement,” PicKell said. “Michigan won a national title in the last two years and they’re acting like this is a standard we have to do every year. If we don’t, it’s a failure, and it was one down year with a new head coach.

“You’re seeing it in the portal. You saw it with Bryce Underwood. Even without Bryce Underwood, what I’ve heard and what I’ve been told is that Michigan now is no longer going to lose on the NIL front when it comes to acquiring talent. That is scary.”

Underwood is Michigan’s most notable success this season in terms of recruiting. He is the top-ranked recruit in the nation and is expected to be a top QB for years to come. The Wolverines successfully brought him to Michigan after he initially committed to LSU.

Additionally, the Wolverines have made significant additions to head coach Sherrone Moore’s coaching staff. One of the most notable being Chip Lindsey becoming the team’s new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
