Analysts Offers Reality Check on Bill Belichick’s College Football Impact Compared to “Interesting” Deion Sanders

Bill Belichick had a tremendous coaching career in the NFL, winning six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. Now that he has joined the North Carolina Tar Heels as their head coach, the college football community is interested to see how his talents translate to the NCAA.

On Friday, Ari Wasserman and Andy Staples did a live stream on the On3 YouTube channel. During their discussion, they compared Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders to Bill Belichick. While most fans agree they are the most interesting head coaches in college football, Wasserman spoke about how they are different.

“I think we got so much excitement from Deion because of who Deion is,” Ari Wasserman said (27:35). “In my brain, Bill Belichick coming into college football was gonna have the same feel, but the fact of the matter is that Deion Sanders is interesting. I don’t know if Bill Belichick the human being is interesting.”

Wasserman went on to say that Belichick is not interesting because of what he does off the field, like Coach Prime. He was keen to see if Belichick’s success translates to college from the NFL.

Andy Staples responded by noting the difference between Deion Sanders and Bill Belichick.

“In the context of himself as a football coach, he’s never made himself the show or the story. Deion was just being Deion Sanders; he was not being anybody different. He’s inherently interesting no matter what he does because that’s who he is.”

Ari Wasserman Believes North Carolina Will Be More Interesting Next Season Because of Bill Belichick

While Ari Wasserman does not think Bill Belichick is an inherently interesting person, he does think his presence will make the North Carolina Tar Heels more interesting. In the aforementioned video, he said:

“Everything North Carolina does on the field this year becomes inherently more interesting because it’s connected to Bill Belichick. Deion Sanders giving us six months of fodder and talk show stuff is his personality, that’s just not the case (with Bill Belichick).” (28:28)

Despite being in the coaching fraternity for 50 years, Bill Belichick has never coached at the college level. He started his career as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts in 1975 and progressed his career in the NFL from there. Tar Heels fans will be watching eagerly to see if he can help them progress in the ACC after a 6-7 season.
