Austin Simmons, the quarterback from Ole Miss, is uncertain to start against undefeated Tulane on Saturday as ESPN’s report states that it is “unlikely” that he will start against Tulane, missing his second consecutive start. Simmons continues to carry the left ankle injury suffered during the road victory at Kentucky, which remains a significant issue for the Lane Kiffin-coached Rebels.
Simmons first injured the ankle in Ole Miss’s Week 2 win over Kentucky. The injury was serious enough to keep Simmons on the sidelines for the entire game against Arkansas, forcing the Rebels to turn to their backup option at the most important position on the field.
Trinidad Chambliss, a transfer from Ferris State, rose to the occasion, finishing 21 of 29 passing for 353 yards and one touchdown in the air against Arkansas. Chambliss also showed off his dual-threat ability by rushing 15 times for 62 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Things took a dramatic turn in that game in Arkansas when Chambliss suffered a relatively bloody hand injury that required him to leave the game temporarily.
Simmons, who, despite struggling with an ankle injury, came off the bench for exactly one play. Simmons threw a 4-yard touchdown pass, but not without further injuring himself.

Ole Miss Faces Uncertainty Against Undefeated Tulane
Lane Kiffin was vocal about Simmons’ availability earlier this week. However, it seems those expectations have taken a hit as the week progressed, with indications that his medical staff is taking careful measures with Simmons’ recovery.
This presents a difficult situation for Ole Miss, based on the opponent they are going to be playing. Tulane comes into Oxford with a perfect 3-0 record.
Tulane has beaten Northwestern, South Alabama, and Duke rather steadily. Beating the Rebels would create a solid resume for the 13th-ranked Rebels and would further solidify their position this campaign.
While Simmons has not shown his full impact due to injury this season, he has shown how impactful he can be when healthy because of that time he played. He completed 34 of 56 attempts for 580 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions in terms of passes he threw when available.
His ability to move contributes to the Ole Miss offense as noted in his 16 attempts for 69 yards, and 1 rushing touchdown timeframe. With Simmons out of the equation for tonight’s game, it will be interesting to see how they cope with his absence against Tulane.
