Analyst Questions Michigan’s Coaching Search Strategy As $87m Candidate No Longer In Play

The Michigan Wolverines are battling the aftermath of head coach Sherrone Moore’s firing and his subsequent arrest after he invaded the home of a Michigan staffer, with whom he allegedly engaged in an inappropriate relationship, after the dismissal.

The Wolverines need to find a new head coach and according to college football analyst Craig Shermon, the program was willing to go to great lengths to sign Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer, who is signed to an eight-year deal worth at least $87 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. However, the Crimson Tide won the game against Oklahoma in the College Football Playoffs, which meant that Alabama had no reason to fire DeBoer.

“Going into this past weekend, there was a pretty ambitious list of candidates that Michigan was interested in interviewing and possibly giving their coaching job to, but things have changed quickly since then,” Shermon said (1:30) on Locked on Big 10. “Now, we reported that Michigan had a blank check ready to go to hire Kalen DeBoer out of Alabama. The thinking was that if Alabama lost to Oklahoma in their playoff game on Friday night, then DeBoer would suddenly be free to take a phone call from Michigan and we could talk — blank check, money no object.

“And maybe after back-to-back four-loss seasons in Alabama, maybe Alabama would be done with DeBoer, or he would be done with them one way or the other. It looked like a conversation could be had. Okay, now in that game, Alabama overcame a 17-point deficit — 17-nothing to start the game. They won the game, and now really he’s no longer available in Michigan’s time frame.”

Michigan is now in a race against time as the recruiting process will begin soon. Without a head coach, top recruits have no reason to be interested in the program.

Latest on Michigan HC Hiring Update Ahead of Recruiting Season

After firing head coach Sherrone Moore, Michigan had Biff Poggi take the role in the interim while searching for the right candidate to lead the program. In the meantime, recruits and their parents are getting restless, given the current state of the program.

Poggi told recruits and their parents that Athletic Director Warde Manuel hopes to have a new head coach hired by the end of this month so that they have some name to look up to while remaining committed to the program.

It remains to be seen if Michigan soon finds a face and moves on from the Moore saga.
