The Alabama Crimson Tide have a unique problem at hand. They currently have three quarterbacks gunning for the starter position. Over the last few weeks, Ty Simpson has emerged as the frontrunner, but the race is far from over.
Insider Matt Stahl opined that the Crimson Tide are yet to finalize on their starting quarterback.
“He hasn’t won the race yet,” claimed insider as he revealed OC Ryan Grubb’s take on the redshirt’s future.
As per the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb, Simpson is a good choice, but he isn’t quite there yet. After the second day of camp, Grubb talked about what Simpson needs to do to seal the deal.
“He’s got to do it every day between now and Florida State when we start that preparation,” Ryan Grubb said. “Whoever that person is got to come out and be able to show that it’s clearly him, and that’s what this football team needs. And all three of those guys know that.”
Keelon Russell and Austin Mack are going toe to toe with Simpson for the starting quarterback position. Even though Simpson’s name is coming up more than the other two, it’s only his consistency that’ll tip the scales in his favor.
“And so, I think being able to show up and do that every day and not waver in and out of the type of player he is, the type of decision maker he is, the inconsistencies that a young quarterback would show or a quarterback that’s not ready to start,” Grubb said.
Even with the tough competition coming from Russell and Mack, Simpson can take the position if he remains consistent. There’s no doubt about the talent that the three of them possess. But for Grubb, talent alone can’t guarantee you such an important position.

Ryan Grubb on using lessons from his past
Ryan Grubb’s coaching career started in 2003 with the Kingsley-Pierson HC. Over the years, he changed a lot of teams and coached different positions. Before joining the Crimson Tide in 2025, he was with the Seattle Seahawks as their offensive coordinator. Needless to say, Grubb has learned a lot of lessons from his past.
After Thursday’s practice, Grubb told the media that he is using everything he has learned so far to make this team better.
“A ton. A ton,” Ryan Grubb told reporters. “I think any league right like you, you move from Mountain West to the PAC 12, Pac 12 to SEC, SEC to the NFL. I think there’s different type of coordinator families, different type of coverage structures and things like that people run that run through conferences and areas of football.”
“So I think you know, from that standpoint, you’re just getting used to attacking different types of defenses,” he added.
Last season, the Crimson Tide fell short of the playoffs. Now, with a fresh energy being brought by Ryan Grubb, they’ll look to make a splash.
