SEC Powers Dominate the Race for NCAA Baseball’s No. 1 Tournament Seed

If there is one thing that is clear, it is that the SEC has the absolute best chance of earning the No. 1 seed, as four of the top five teams in the NCAA rankings play in the conference. It’s worth noting that three of the last four No. 1 seeds have been SEC teams.

If the season ended today, Texas would have the best chance of being named the No. 1 seed by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. The Longhorns have been the best team so far this season with 32 wins and five losses overall, 15-2 in conference play.

Jim Schlossnagle’s Longhorns are currently in a great stretch, having won nine of their last 10 games, including seven against conference opponents.

Arkansas is another SEC team that is doing well in its bid to earn the No. 1 seed. They are currently ranked second by the NCAA with 32 wins and five losses, 13-5 in conference play.

The Razorbacks have been doing very good over the last three weeks, winning eight of their last 12 games. However, they dropped back-to-back series to Georgia (2-1) and Texas A&M (2-1), which knocked them out of the top spot in the rankings.

Clemson is the only non-SEC team in the NCAA current top five. The current second-place team in the Atlantic Coast Conference has 35 wins and six losses on the season, 13-4 against conference opponents.

The Tigers have won nine of their last 10 games, including a sweep of California-Berkeley. They will look to do the same this Saturday against Louisville, who they have beaten twice this week.

The Tennessee Volunteers and Georgia Bulldogs round out the top five in the latest NCAA rankings. The Volunteers are second in the SEC with 12 wins and four losses (33-5 overall), while Georgia is fifth in the same conference with 10 wins and seven losses (33-8 overall).
