The NCAA Division I baseball transfer portal, launched in 2018, streamlines the transfer process for student-athletes between schools.
It functions as a centralized database where players can declare their intention to transfer, allowing coaches at other schools to find and communicate with potential transfers.

What Is the D1 Baseball Transfer Portal? Everything You Need to Know in 2025
The portal was designed to offer student-athletes more control over their transfer process, providing better transparency and the opportunity to consider all their options.
- Initiating the Transfer: To enter the transfer portal, a student-athlete must make a formal request to their school’s compliance office. The school is then required to enter the athlete’s name into the portal within 48 hours.
- Portal Access: Once listed, the athlete’s contact information becomes accessible to coaches nationwide, facilitating recruitment discussions.
- Transfer Windows: In baseball, the primary transfer window is open for 45 days after the NCAA Tournament field is announced, typically in late May. A secondary window is available between Dec. 1 and 15.
In April 2021, the NCAA Division I Council granted a one-time transfer exemption, allowing athletes to transfer once without having to sit out a year if they meet certain academic and eligibility requirements.
In addition, the NCAA approved a proposal to modify transfer deadlines, giving athletes a 60-day opportunity to enter the portal beginning the day after NCAA postseason selections. This modification is intended to give athletes greater flexibility in making transfer decisions.
- The Walk-on Rule: A walk-on at a previous college is eligible to be a walk-on at a new college.
- Redshirting: Redshirting, or sitting out a year of competition while training with the team and remaining scholarship-eligible, is common among transfer athletes. As of 2021, first-time transfers to Division I colleges are no longer required to redshirt for a year before competing at their new school, subject to specific guidelines.
Considerations for Student-Athletes
- Academic Standards: Maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 is generally required to be eligible for transfer.
- Eligibility Clock: Athletes have a five-year window from their initial full-time enrollment to complete four years of competition.
- Scholarship Implications: Transferring can affect athletic scholarships. While current scholarships are routinely renewed for the term, future awards are not guaranteed.
