While there aren’t any DFS plays at the time of writing, there are plenty of fantasy plays from both teams this week.
Hank Bachmeier proved us right last week with a strong performance against FIU, and he’ll only get more comfortable as the season continues. One thing’s for sure: he appears to be a great fit in Sonny Cumbie’s system already.
Smoke Harris torched FIU’s defense last week, reminding everyone of his big play ability. Cyrus Allen didn’t have the game he wanted, but he’s still a big play threat and worth keeping in the lineup.
If Marquis Crosby is back to full strength, he’s definitely someone to consider for the running back position. A healthy Crosby opens up and balances the Louisiana Tech offense that already showed how explosive it can be through the air.
Rhett Lashlee knows how to produce an explosive offense. He’s done it pretty much everywhere he’s been, and now SMU’s benefitting from his offensive mind. This year, it’s the Preston Stone show, something fans have longed for since he arrived on campus.
Stone shouldn’t have to play hero ball, though he has the talent to do so. Jordan Kerley and Jordan Hudson give him two electric players at receiver, and tight end RJ Maryland is set for a breakout year. All three are great fantasy options.
Running back is a little crowded with four potential ball carriers, though they’ll all bring their unique style to the position. Miami transfer Jaylan Knighton has big play ability and could separate himself from the rest.
Prediction for Louisiana Tech vs. SMU
Louisiana Tech struggled last week with FIU but also proved that it could keep its composure and take care of business. In order to start 2-0, they’ll need to elevate their game.
The Bulldogs defense could be in for a long night if they don’t figure out how to stop the run. SMU’s backfield is deep, and they can rotate in fresh bodies to gash Louisiana Tech’s front line. If their defense can’t create stops consistently, then the pressure goes to the offense.
Bachmeier and company can score, but it’s hard to believe they’ll be able to score at the rate SMU will this weekend. Maybe we’ll be surprised.
SMU has big goals this year. With a new look, AAC opens the door for them to claim the throne. The Mustangs have the offense to hang with anyone, and Lashlee’s group is as talented as it’s ever been.
Stone should be electric with his arm and legs, so he’s a matchup nightmare for defenses. The talent at the skill positions and up front ensures that he’ll feel comfortable leading the offense. As it’s been for the last few years, it’s up to the defense to determine how high this team rises.
Lashlee added quality players from the transfer portal on defense, but he needs that group to contribute more to the wins. SMU can win a majority of its games relying on the offense to outscore the opposition, but eventually, they’ll need stops. For now, they’ll be just fine.
