Tamin Lipsey, Iowa State’s standout point guard, is expected to return for the Cyclones’ NCAA Tournament opener following a recent groin injury.
This development significantly improves the team’s prospects as they begin their March Madness journey.

Tamin Lipsey Injury Update: Cyclones Star Cleared for NCAA Tournament Opener
Lipsey exited the Big 12 Tournament game against Cincinnati on March 12, 2025, with a groin injury after scoring 16 points. Head coach T.J. Otzelberger expressed confidence in Lipsey’s condition, adding that he expected Lipsey to be well and ready to play in the following game.
Lipsey voiced cautious optimism that he will be available Friday when Iowa State, the South Region’s No. 3 seed, faces Lipscomb (25-9) in the first round.
“It’s felt a lot better every day,” Lipsey said Thursday. “So I’m expecting to go out there and play, and I hope I can go out and feel the best I can. … I feel like I’m trending in a positive direction and feel good about it.”
Lipsey’s return would be a significant boost for the Iowa State defense. This season, the 6-foot-1 guard averages 10.8 points and 3.2 assists. His leadership and playmaking skills are crucial for both the Cyclones’ offensive and defensive plans.
His return assures that the squad maintains its competitive advantage when it faces Lipscomb in the first round.
In addition to Lipsey, fellow guard Keshon Gilbert has been battling a muscle problem. According to reports, Gilbert was sidelined for the Big 12 quarterfinals against BYU due to a chronic injury. His availability remains doubtful, and his condition will be assessed before the event.

Coach Otzelberger has acknowledged the physical impact of the season on his players, but he is optimistic about their rehabilitation. He underlined the necessity of following medical advice to maintain the health of Lipsey and Gilbert as the team prepares for the NCAA Tournament.
With Lipsey set to suit up, Iowa State hopes to use his experience and ability to advance in the tournament. The team’s success will be greatly reliant on his ability to coordinate plays and offer defensive solidity against Lipscomb.
