‘What’s Tragic About Me?’ — Former Duke Star Jabari Parker Reflects on NBA Career

Jabari Parker was once one of the most spoken-about basketball prospects. He was a high school legend who went on to become a Duke staple. Soon after, he was the second overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Parker is the kind of person who is simply destined for greatness. However, injuries derailed his NBA career.

Jabari Parker is simply not a “tragic story”!

Parker went on to play just four seasons for the Milwaukee Bucks before bouncing around five other teams over the next four years. Later, he took a year away from professional basketball.

Instead of coming back to the NBA hard courts, Parker signed with FC Barcelona in 2023. And now he is thriving in the EuroLeague. Yet he has often been labeled a “tragic story” in the hoop circles.

Despite playing at FC Barcelona, Parker seems to be weighed down by his NBA narratives. This often seems to come from critics who believe his career never lived up to the potential he evidently has. However, Parker begs to differ.

“People say I’m a tragic story. What’s tragic about me? I made millions of dollars, I fed my family, I brought my family out of the ghetto,” Parker said in a recent interview with Eurohoops. “Those same people who probably wrote those stories haven’t even achieved 1% of what I’ve done.” Oops!

And Parker is right about all that he said! Despite his two-time ACL tear and two additional meniscus repairs, he has managed to average 20.1 points per game in the 2016-17 season. However, the injuries worsened, and it got tough to commit to the hard courts. By 2022, he found himself without an NBA contract.

Instead of seeing the NBA as a failure, Parker sees it as an evolution. He rediscovered his love for the game in Barcelona, where he has become one of the team’s most crucial players.

Parker even scored 34 points against MoraBanc Andorra, playing with FC Barcelona. Above all the accomplishments and stats, Parker feels at peace with where he is now.

“The most important thing for me is being in the moment. My success is that I get up and I can be with my loved ones, that I can talk to my friends and share this space.” Parker puts it. “That’s all that matters to me. Everything else—money and the places I’ve been—I haven’t even given any importance to my draft position. I’ve fulfilled my dream; that’s all that matters to me.”

While he does admit that being one of the best players in the NBA would have been great, it is definitely not the only barometer of success.

“For me, playing here is the same. My life here is wonderful, and that’s why I keep my feet on the ground—nothing is guaranteed. I could have quit basketball at 14, and now, at 30, I’m still playing the sport I love, competing in the EuroLeague in a spectacular city and club.”

Despite his journey to Barcelona not being a planned one, it has turned out to be the perfect fit. Barcelona has become his new home. “I’ve never kept trophies at home, but the only shirt I’ll always keep at home is the Barça shirt,” Parker said.
