In a surprising twist in college basketball’s coaching carousel, West Virginia head basketball coach Darian DeVries has emerged as a leading contender for the prestigious Indiana coaching job.

The current Mountaineers coach only took over in Morgantown in March 2024 but has quickly drawn attention following Mike Woodson’s departure from the Hoosiers’ program.

Darian DeVries Emerges As Indiana HC Candidate

Darian DeVries’ rapid rise through the coaching ranks has turned heads across the college landscape. His career began with an impressive six-year stint at Drake University, where he compiled a stellar 150-55 record with multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.

Followed by a strong first-year turnaround at West Virginia this season, he has positioned himself as an attractive option for one of college basketball’s most storied programs.

Before Drake, the Iowa native spent 17 years as an assistant at Creighton University under Dana Altman and Greg McDermott, contributing to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. His tenure at Drake showcased his leadership, guiding the Bulldogs to six consecutive 20-win seasons.

At West Virginia, DeVries inherited a team coming off a dismal 9-23 record. Despite injuries and roster challenges, he engineered an impressive turnaround leading the Mountaineers to a 16-11 record in his first season putting them on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

His ability to revitalize struggling programs makes him a strong candidate for Indiana’s historic basketball program.

    DeVries’ Midwest Coaching Roots

DeVries’ deep Midwestern ties make him a natural fit for Indiana. Having experience playing college basketball at Northern Iowa and coaching extensively in the region, he understands the basketball culture that defines the Hoosier state.

His coaching philosophy emphasizes smart guard play, a deliberate pace and effective three point shooting, the elements that align well with Indiana’s traditional playing style.

Financially, pursuing DeVries comes with challenges. His current contract with West Virginia includes a significant buyout clause, estimated at approximately $5.62 million (37.5% of his remaining compensation).

While this represents a major investment, Indiana’s commitment to restoring its basketball program to national prominence may justify the expense.

Indiana’s coaching search remains fluid with other candidates reportedly under consideration including Ben McCollum and a third mystery candidate are in as well.

However, DeVries’ combination of proven success, Midwest roots and coaching philosophy appears to give him an edge in the selection process.

As Indiana continues its deliberations reports suggest DeVries’ candidacy is gaining momentum. His potential hiring would be a major win for the Hoosiers and a significant loss for West Virginia, which had anticipated a longer tenure from its recently hired coach.

The coming days will likely bring more clarity to this developing situation as Indiana moves closer to finalizing its next head coach.
