Scott and Bryce Drew: Brothers in Basketball

Yes, Scott Drew and Bryce Drew are brothers. Scott, born in 1970, is the older sibling, while Bryce arrived four years later in 1974.

The Drew brothers belong to a family that is obsessed with the game. Their father, Homer Drew, coached for over 50 years, most famously at Valparaiso University from 1988 to 2011.

Bryce made his mark as a player first. In 1998, he sank a legendary buzzer-beater for No. 13 seed Valparaiso to knock off No. 4 seed Ole Miss in the NCAA Tournament’s first round. That shot propelled the Crusaders to the Sweet 16 and cemented Bryce’s place in March Madness history.

He later played six years in the NBA, bouncing between teams like the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls, before stepping into coaching.

After assisting his dad at Valpo, Bryce took the head job there in 2011. He’s since coached at Vanderbilt and now Grand Canyon, where he notched the program’s first Division I tournament win in 2024.

Scott’s path was different. He never played at Bryce’s level, instead jumping straight into coaching. He started as a student manager at Butler, then joined his dad’s staff at Valparaiso in 1993. When Homer retired in 2002, Scott took over for one season. Then, in 2003, Baylor came calling.

At that time, the program was a wreck—decades of losing capped by a scandal involving NCAA penalties had derailed it. However, Scott didn’t flinch. He rebuilt Baylor into a powerhouse, winning the 2021 national title and racking up 12 tournament trips in 21 years.

The Drew brothers have distinct styles but share a knack for big moments. Scott’s steady hand turned Baylor from a punchline into a champion.

Bryce’s influence, first as a player and now as a coach, is well-known in every team he has been associated with. As March Madness unfolds, we keep a close eye on the brothers as they add more to their family’s name and legacy.
