Golden State Warriors superstar guard Stephen Curry is having himself a day.
Last night, the four-time NBA champion, two-time MVP, and Olympic gold medalist became the first-ever NBA player to hit 4,000 three-pointers. As he celebrates his 37th birthday today, we take a look back to his time with the Davidson Wildcats.

Stephen Curry’s Most Iconic College Feats
Curry, raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, committed to Davidson College, which aggressively recruited him from the tenth grade. Before he even stepped foot on the court, head coach Bob McKillop was already praising him.
“Wait ’til you see Steph Curry. He is something special,” McKillop told alumni in Charlotte.
In just his second game as a Wildcat, Curry delivered, recording 32 points and nine rebounds against Michigan, finishing the season with a school freshman record of 730 points. He also broke Davidson’s single-season record for three-pointers and led the Southern Conference in scoring at 21.5 points per game, second to only Kevin Durant in freshman scoring.
Curry led the Wildcats to a 29-5 record and Southern Conference regular-season and tournament titles, breaking Keydren Clark’s NCAA freshman season record for three-pointers in the Southern Conference semifinal against Furman. The Wildcats would be eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament by Maryland.
At the end of his freshman season, Curry was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, SoCon Tournament MVP, and selected to the SoCon All-tournament team, All-freshman team, and All-SoCon First Team.
Curry’s next season was even better. As a sophomore, he led the Wildcats to a perfect 20-0 conference record and their first NCAA tournament win since 1969 against Gonzaga, scoring 40 points, including 30 in the second half.
Curry helped lead Davidson all the way to the Elite Eight before they eventually lost to Kansas in a nailbiter, 59-57. He became the fourth player to score over 30 points in his first four career NCAA tournament games and set the record for most three-pointers in a season with 162, a record that still stands today, tied only by Liberty’s Darius McGee’s 2022-2023 season.
Curry was named to the AP’s All-America Second Team, the Most Outstanding Player of the Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament, and nominated for an ESPY in the Breakthrough Player of the Year category.
In his junior year, Curry surpassed the 2000-point mark, including a career-high 44 against Oklahoma in an 82-78 loss. He became Davidson’s all-time scoring leader on Feb. 28, 2009, against Georgia Southern with a 34-point performance and finished his career with 2,635 points.
While the Wildcats failed to win the Southern Conference tournament and advance to the NCAA tournament, they received a No. 6 seed in the 2009 NIT, where they lost in the second round.
After scoring 28.6 points per game, Curry was crowned NCAA scoring champion and named a consensus first-team All-American before entering the NBA Draft.
In May 2022, Curry completed his coursework and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. In Aug. 2022, the Wildcats retired his number, and he was inducted into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame.
