In a recent appearance on the “Straight Out the Jungle” podcast, NBA legend Charles Barkley didn’t hesitate to share his thoughts on college basketball’s most prestigious individual award. Despite his Auburn ties, Barkley believes Duke freshman Cooper Flagg has surpassed Tigers’ star Johni Broome in the National Player of the Year race.

Team Success Tips the Scales for Cooper Flagg
“Early in the year, Johni Broome was the clear-cut favorite, but I think his injury set him back” Barkley explained. Meanwhile, Duke has been “demolishing people,” winning games by 30-point margins, an impressive feat that has elevated Flagg’s candidacy in Barkley’s eyes.
Barkley emphasized how team performance significantly impacts individual awards. “Duke has been unstoppable,” he noted, giving Flagg an edge despite Broome’s impressive statistical season for top-ranked Auburn.
According to Barkley, Broome’s expanded offensive game and passing ability have transformed Auburn’s offense. However, Flagg’s impact on Duke’s dominant stretch run has been impossible for voters to ignore.
The timing of Broome’s mid-season injury proved unfortunate, creating an opening that Flagg capitalized on with consistent excellence. As Barkley put it, “When you’re on the best team in the country, that gives you an edge in these awards.”
While acknowledging he doesn’t have an official vote, Barkley admitted he would likely choose Flagg if given the opportunity. “He’s been that good,” the Auburn legend conceded.
Tournament Performance Could Change the Narrative
Despite his current preference for Flagg, Barkley left the door open for Broome to change minds during March Madness. “If Auburn makes a deep run in the tournament, he’ll have his chance to prove everyone wrong” Barkley said.
The tournament presents unique pressure particularly for favorites like Auburn and Duke. Barkley noted both teams “will have the most pressure” to reach the Final Four creating a high-stakes environment where legacies are defined.
Broome’s performance when it matters most could cement his place in Auburn basketball history. Barkley already considers him a potential all-time great.

“If they win the national championship, I’d put him at the top. If they even get to the Final Four, he could still be considered the greatest Auburn player ever,” Barkley said.
While Barkley may be leaning toward Flagg for NPOY honors, now, a dominant March showing by Broome could force a reconsideration. As tournament time approaches, the race remains fluid, with championship performances potentially outweighing regular-season accolades.
