Auburn forward Johni Broome is deep in National Player of the Year conversations. The superstar senior led the Tigers in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks in the regular season, earning himself a late first-round or early second-round draft grade.
But who are the most important people to the Auburn star? Let’s take a further look at Broome’s family.

Meet Johni Broome’s Family: The Athletic Background Behind Auburn’s Star
Broome was born to John and Julie Broome on July 19, 2002, and the two have played a crucial role in shaping his life ever since. One of three siblings, Johni was best friends with older brother John Jr. — who played football at FIU — and sister Jade’a.

“My husband is John Sr., and my oldest son is John Jr., and when we had Johni. When we knew we was [sic] having my second son, we wanted our kids’ names to be unique,” Julie told the Montgomery Advertiser. “Just have their own personality, have their own name, let it be something that you’re not one of many,” she continued.
“With that comes character and strength, so we decided, after a couple of different options, it was going to be Johni.” Julie also wants people to know that the name is Johni (pronounced j-UH-nEYE), not “Johnny.”
“It honestly is always a conversation, and it’s always been mispronounced,” Julie told the publication. “It’s John-i. Johni. When you say it together, it’s just John-i. … I think, sometimes, people put too much emphasis on it, or it’s just where they’re from or what their accent is.”
Together, the Broome family refers to themselves as the “J.A.B. Five,” with each family member having the same three initials.
His mother, Julie, is no stranger to basketball. She is a former player and coached at Jacksonville State University in Alabama. She also had a professional stint in Germany.

Father John is a former baseball player who played at Alabama State before transitioning to coaching. The family’s athletic history helped shape Johni as a player.
While Broome will almost certainly be a star at the next level, his collegiate career isn’t over just yet. Following the SEC Tournament, the superstar and his Tigers will likely be a No. 1 seed looking for the program’s first-ever national title.
