Golden State Superstar Steph Curry Takes Assistant GM Role at Alma Mater Davidson

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry created history last week. On Saturday against the Detroit Pistons when he went on to join the 25,000-point club. He became the 26th player in NBA history to do the same.

As Curry’s NBA legacy continues to grow, he has decided to return to where it all began— his alma mater, Davidson College—to further help the program.

Stephen Curry Returns to His Alma Mater in Assistant GM Role

Long before the 37-year-old Stephen Curry became a name synonymous with greatness, he was an overlooked recruit hoping to make a name for himself.

Curry had always dreamt of following his father’s footsteps and playing for Virginia Tech. However, the Hokies only offered him a walk-on spot. Davidson’s Head coach, Bob McKillop, saw potential in Curry, though. And boy-oh-boy, was he right.

In his very first college season, he led Davidson to a 29-5 record, broke the NCAA freshman three-point record, and was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year.

By the end of that year, Curry had become Davidson’s all-time leading scorer with 2,488 points and the NCAA’s 2009 scoring champion. The rest, as they say, is now history.

After his draft in 2009, nobody expected Stephen Curry back on the Davidson courts. However, surprising everyone, Curry will be returning to his alma mater as the assistant general manager.

So does this mean he is retiring and leaving the Golden State Warriors behind? Well, that’s where he is creating history yet again. Curry will be the first active professional athlete to take on an NCAA administrative role.

What Does Curry’s New Role Entail?

Curry will mentor both men’s and women’s basketball players and work alongside Davidson’s GM, Austin Buntz. Additionally, the NBA star will start an eight-figure fund to support the school’s basketball program. However, he is not doing this alone.

His wife, Ayesha Curry, and Davidson College supporters Don, Matt, and Erica Berman will support the eight-figure fund.

The Golden State legend has won four NBA championships, claimed two MVP awards, and made 11 All-Star appearances, so the Wildcats program will be smart to listen to someone familiar with success.

Now, as he takes on this new role with Davidson, he’s ensuring that the next generation of Wildcats gets a similar taste of greatness.

It’s a true full-circle moment, and for Curry, it’s just another chapter in a legendary career still being written.
