Cooper Flagg is one of the most talked-about college athletes this year, and to most, he’s the future No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft. With each game he plays, he continues to prove why he deserves that spot.
When he’s featured on social media or shown on SportsCenter, they usually highlight his scoring plays, but what about the ones that aren’t as flashy or exciting? Here’s what sets Flagg apart from the rest.

What Makes Cooper Flagg Versatile?
This season with Duke, Flagg has put up impressive numbers. He’s averaging 19.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. He’s shooting 49% from the field and an impressive 38% from 3-point range.
In an interview with USA Today, Kansas star center Hunter Dickinson, who faced Flagg and Duke earlier this season, explained what makes Flagg so special.
“I would say, for him, his best trait is his versatility… Obviously, he scores the ball at a prolific pace, but he’s able to play great without scoring, and I think that’s a super impressive trait. Not a lot of guys are able to do that, but he can affect the game in so many different ways,” Dickinson said.
The Kansas big man also highlighted Flagg’s defensive skills: “I mean defensively, whether it’s rebounding, blocking shots, or guarding the ball 1-on-1.”
Earlier today on College GameDay, analysts Jay Williams and Seth Greenberg praised Flagg’s all-around game. Greenberg pointed out Flagg’s ability to play in ball screens, saying, “Let’s take a look at his first ability right here. His ability to play in ball screens. He’s a screener right now, but he’s going to short roll here. Now he becomes a playmaker. Terrific drop, die, great pass.”
Williams added, “And this is what you love about him. Reading the tag here. Look at the DHL. Comes up DHL. Defense comes from the weak side. Boom, quick skip pass to Sion James for a knockdown three.”
They also discussed Flagg’s fast-break ability. Greenberg said, “His ability to initiate the fast break. He leans in and rebounds. He gets a defensive rebound. He can turn, look up at the floor, put his eyes on the rim. Great job of Maluach running the floor. Good job of him seeing the player.”
Williams praised Flagg’s court awareness, saying, “How about that pass with the left hand, Seth? And this is great, second-hand transition. Letting the defense flatten out. Okay, watch Maluach as he’s coming down the court. He’s gonna seal the big. He pulls the ball out. And look, the head fake, right into the and-one.”
Finally, Greenberg noted Flagg’s shooting, saying, “Can he shoot the three? Good job of setting up off the ball screen.” Williams wrapped it up, saying, “Transition in the drag screen jumps up and knocks down the three.” Both agreed that Flagg’s versatility is what makes him one of the top players in college basketball.
