Kevin Boyle, one of the most accomplished high school basketball coaches in history, is making a major move. After 14 seasons at Montverde Academy, where he built a dynasty and coached multiple future NBA stars, Boyle is leaving the Florida powerhouse for SPIRE Academy in Ohio.
The move marks the end of an era at Montverde and the start of a new chapter for Boyle, whose impact on high school basketball is undeniable.

Kevin Boyle’s Legendary Run at Montverde Academy
Boyle arrived at Montverde in 2011 after a successful tenure at St. Patrick High School in New Jersey, where he coached the likes of Kyrie Irving and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Under his leadership, Montverde became the country’s premier high school basketball program, winning eight national championships in 12 seasons.

His rosters were loaded with future NBA stars, including Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Cade Cunningham, RJ Barrett, D’Angelo Russell, and Scottie Barnes. More recently, Boyle coached Duke’s standout Cooper Flagg, the projected No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.
The Eagles’ dominance peaked in 2023-24 when they went a perfect 33-0 with a stacked lineup featuring Flagg, Asa Newell (Georgia), Derik Queen (Maryland), and Liam McNeeley (UConn).
Now, with Montverde sitting at 19-6 this season and set to compete in the Nike EYBL Scholastic Tournament, Boyle is preparing to say goodbye.
Why Is Kevin Boyle Leaving Montverde?
Boyle’s departure comes as high school basketball undergoes massive changes, particularly with the rise of NIL deals and evolving pathways to college and professional basketball.
“The entire landscape of high school basketball has changed,” Boyle told ESPN. “There are new platforms for players to showcase themselves. Interest is growing. Expectations have changed, with players now having professional representation. Top prospects are looking for ways to maximize their development and image.”
He believes SPIRE Academy, backed by managing partner Jonathan Ehrenfeld, provides the right vision for navigating this new era.
At SPIRE, Boyle can shape another elite program while adapting to the evolving basketball ecosystem.
With Boyle departing, Montverde faces the challenge of maintaining its dominance without the architect of its dynasty. The Eagles will still compete in the upcoming Chipotle Nationals in April, but searching for a new head coach will be a significant storyline in the coming months.

Boyle’s move to SPIRE signals a shift in the high school basketball landscape, and all eyes will be on how he builds his next powerhouse in Ohio.
