College Basketball Crown vs. March Madness: How Do the Postseason Tournaments Compare?

While the NCAA Tournament is the ultimate postseason tournament in college basketball, 2025 marks the first season of the College Basketball Crown, yet another postseason tournament that will compete with March Madness, the NIT, the CBI, and others.

But how does this new tournament, which is being held in Las Vegas, compare to the other postseason events?

What is the College Basketball Crown?

The College Basketball Crown will host a 16-team tournament with a field of teams who missed the cut for the NCAA Tournament. It will be a single-elimination tournament, like March Madness, and will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Teams from major conferences such as the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, and Big East will likely be selected from a pool of teams whose records didn’t make the cut.

The tournament will be showcased on Fox and its networks like FS1.

How Does The NCAA Tournament Work?

The NCAA Tournament is often considered one of the world’s greatest sporting events, along with the World Cup, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Super Bowl, and many others.

After an adventurous four-month regular season, 68 teams are selected from many different conferences across the country. Through a single-elimination tournament, the champion is revealed after several weeks of competition.

Random teams from random parts of the country square off at neutral sites, which fans can witness through channels such as CBS, TBS, TNT, and Tru TV.

The tournament starts with the First Four, a play-in in Dayton, Ohio. Days after, the Round of 64 and the Round of 32 are held throughout the first week of the tournament. In the second week, the Sweet 16 and the Elite 8 are held at bigger venues.

Then, this year’s tournament concludes in San Antonio, Texas, with the Final Four and the National Championship being held in the Alamodome.

While the NCAA Tournament has long been the ultimate postseason tournament in men’s college basketball, it’ll be interesting to see how much popularity the College Basketball Crown boosts the new tournament.
