Darrion Williams Injury Update: Will Texas Tech Have Their Big Man’s Services vs. Kansas?

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are fighting to stay alive in the race atop the Big 12. With a tough stretch to end the season, being at full strength is a must for head coach Grant McCasland’s squad.

However, as they head into the back stretch, they may be without forward Darrion Williams against Kansas.

    What Happened to Darrion Williams?

While it’s not quite clear what exactly happened, Williams was injured during Texas Tech’s game against West Virginia on February 22. He was ruled out almost immediately for the Red Raiders’ next game just two days later against Houston with what was called a lower-body injury.

Williams missed just his second game of the year when he sat against the Cougars on Feb. 24.

The team’s third-leading scorer this year, Williams’ impact has been felt at both ends of the court. He’s currently averaging 14.9 points per game to go with 5.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest.

In his most recent absence, Texas Tech’s record without him on the court dropped to 1-1.

    Darrion Williams Injury Latest

The latest injury update on Williams wasn’t quite as positive as Texas Tech fans would have hoped. According to McCasland, it’s likely that Williams remains a game-time decision at best against Kansas.

“What we look like for Saturday’s game, it’s hard to say,” McCasland said after Thursday’s practice. “It truly is day to day, seeing if we can get them to feel confident and healthy, where when they step out on the floor, they can actually be full-go competitive.”

Of course, when McCasland refers to ‘they,’ he’s also referring to Williams and fellow injured star Chance McMillian, who has missed the Red Raiders last two games.

The star duo are the team’s second- and third-leading scorers this year, having played a major role in the team’s successes when JT Toppin was out.

McCasland, though not quite sounding fully confident, indicated that the duo would be a game-time decision, and unlike McMillian, Williams wasn’t seen in a walking boot earlier this week.

All that to say, Williams’ impact has been felt if he’s not on the court, but if he can’t quite be a full go, it’s unlikely McCasland will put Williams on the court until the Tournament.
