Chance McMillian Injury Update: Will Texas Tech’s Star Guard Play at Kansas?

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are hoping to ride off into the Big 12 Tournament on a high note to end the regular season. However, as they approach the final three-game stretch of the season, they may be without a handful of stars.

Most notably is Chance McMillian, who has missed the last two Red Raiders games this month.

    What Happened to Chance McMillian?

McMillian injured himself during Texas Tech’s February 18th matchup against TCU in Fort Worth. While the injury itself was not quite apparent, his hobbling around on the court at times during the 69-66 loss to the Horned Frogs was.

And following the game, McMillian was then spotted in a protective walking boot during the following practice. McMillian hasn’t played since the TCU game.

McMillian is second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game this year. He’s shooting 53.4% from the field and a team-high 45.4% from three-point range.

After missing the last two games with an injury, there was hope from the Texas Tech faithful that McMillian would be able to get back on the court for the final stretch of the regular season. That stretch includes a trip to Kansas, the regular season home finale against Colorado, and a season-ending road trip to Arizona State.

As of Thursday before their Saturday tip with Kansas, however, all signs pointed toward McMillian missing the action yet again. Head coach Grant McCasland indicated what he would have needed to see from McMillian to feel confident in him playing vs. the Jayhawks.

“Our hope in approaching this (game) has been getting them ready to play every game,” McCasland said about McMillian and forward Darrion Williams. “Neither one of them have practiced since last game. We’ll need to see that before we put them in a game.”

McCasland went on to elaborate about this, saying that both players had been at and around their practices, but neither had player — McMillian specifically — been up to full speed. And that’s largely been the determining factor in whether or not a player will play for this TTU team.

In McMillian’s absence, the Red Raiders have gone 1-1 with an easy victory over West Virginia but a hard-fought defeat against No. 4 Houston on Monday, Feb. 24.

It sounds like, however, that if McMillian had it his way, he’d be in on the action.

“I will say their intent is to play Saturday,” McCasland said. “From their perspective, I get the sense they’re done watching.”
