The SEC Is a Basketball Conference — 4 Teams in Top 6 of AP Top 25

While the SEC is jostling with other conferences as it tries to call itself the best in college football, it appears as if it is already the best conference in college basketball. Just how dominant has the SEC been this season?

4 SEC Teams Sit Near the Top of AP Poll

With the college basketball season approaching mid-February, teams are starting to show who they really are. The Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators, and Tennessee Volunteers currently sit inside the top six teams in the AP Poll.

As if that is not impressive enough for the SEC, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Missouri, and Mississippi State are also in the Top 25. Many bracketologists are even saying there is a chance the conference gets upwards of 12-14 bids into the NCAA Tournament.

This just goes to show how talented and deep the conference is as a whole, especially with the home stretch of the season approaching.

    Other Conferences With Strong Representation

The SEC is not the only conference with a plethora of teams in the top 15 of the AP Poll.

The Big Ten has five teams represented in the rankings: Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maryland.

Also, the Big 12 has five teams in the top 25 of its own, including Houston, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Arizona, and Kansas.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the sport so far this season has been the UConn Huskies’ underperformance. They are currently unranked after winning back-to-back national championships.

While one Big East team falls, others surge. St. John’s is currently ranked ninth in the country after recent wins over UConn and Marquette.

It is not surprising that a Rick Pitino-coached team is right in the thick of things, but St. John’s status as an elite program this season has been shocking.

Oregon was sitting at a record of 11-1 and comfortably in the top 25 of the rankings seven weeks ago, but now, the Ducks are completely unranked.

Two of the country’s blue bloods, Kentucky and Kansas, both have seven losses but are still sitting within the top 20 of the rankings.
