With Indiana Hoosiers head basketball coach Mike Woodson set to step away at the end of the season, there are plenty of possible candidates who could replace him.
However, there are only so many who could be right for the job.
Who Will Replace Mike Woodson at Indiana?
Being that Woodson is seemingly running out of coaching steam in his late 60s, at least at Indiana, the Hoosiers likely have to identify a younger head coach with a quality track record.
Here are some head coaches who could make sense in Bloomington.
Brad Stevens
Brad Stevens is one of the brightest basketball minds out there, seeing as he had a great track record in Indianapolis with the Butler Bulldogs and now as an executive with the Boston Celtics.
The 48-year-old and Zionsville, Indiana native guided Butler to back-to-back national title game appearances before heading to the NBA to guide the Celtics as both a head coach and later as an executive.
This could be a headlining hire.
Tony Bennett
Although he just retired after a historic run with the Virginia Cavaliers, Tony Bennett could be a tempting option for Indiana.
The former Charlotte Hornets point guard has the mind of both a player and an experienced head coach.
Bennett’s 16-year run at Virginia was highlighted by the team’s national championship victory in 2019, along with six regular-season ACC titles.
Steve Wojciechowski
This might not be a name that most people would think about, but the former Marquette head coach and Duke assistant under Mike Krzyzewski could help the Indiana program out.
The current head coach of the Salt Lake City Stars in the G League may be looking to hop back into the college game.
Although he only made the NCAA Tournament twice in seven seasons at Marquette, that experience could propel him to be better as a head coach the second time around, which could take place in Bloomington.
Chris Carawell
Chris Carawell is another Duke assistant who has a sharp mind for the game of basketball.
Also a former ACC Player of the Year, Carawell could be looking for his first head-coaching opportunity after this season is over.
Being just 47 years of age, he has plenty of big-game experience to help turn the ship around in Indiana.
Tom Crean
What a hire this would be.
Tom Crean, who is known for taking Dwyane Wade and Marquette to the Final Four back in 2003, also coached at Indiana once before for nine years (2008-2017).
