Kadary Richmond was not the same player when he first arrived at St. John’s. After a slow start to the season, many questioned whether the former Seton Hall standout could make an impact. However, Richmond turned things around and emerged as one of the top players in the Big East.
Kadary Richmond’s Evolution Into an All-Big East Player
Richmond’s standout performance against Marquette was part of an impressive stretch that included a game-winning shot against Providence. His basket with 3.0 seconds remaining secured a 74-72 win and helped the Red Storm avoid a disastrous collapse after holding a 19-point second-half lead.
Following that performance, head coach Rick Pitino praised Richmond’s growth and humility.
“He’s a humble superstar. A humble, hard-working guy who’s getting better at his age, he’s like a fine wine. He’s just getting better, and he’s just a great teammate. He doesn’t look for credit, he doesn’t look for praise,” Pitino said after the Marquette game.
His transformation, fueled by hard work, determination, and humility, has made him one of the standout performers for the Red Storm this season. Richmond faced early struggles at St. John’s that raised doubts about whether he could continue the high level of play that made him an All-Big East player at Seton Hall.
His shooting struggles persisted despite offseason adjustments, and his overall game seemed out of sync.
At times, he appeared hesitant and disinterested, leading to concerns about his ability to perform in a new program. However, his teammates were never worried.
“Kadary was never a player that any of us, actually, were worried about. We knew he was going to find his mojo sooner than later,” Zuby Ejiofor said.
The turning point for Richmond came after his return to Seton Hall, where he was greeted with boos from the Pirate fans. This seemed to fuel his fire, and Richmond responded with one of his best performances of the season against No. 11 Marquette, posting 18 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.
His play was a clear indication that he had found his rhythm, and it marked the beginning of a strong stretch for the St. John’s guard.
Since his resurgence, Richmond has played a major role in St. John’s success. Over the past few weeks, he has been playing at an extremely high level, leading the team in several statistical categories.
Richmond has been averaging 17.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 2.4 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game during a five-game stretch. His shooting has been efficient, as he has hit 64.4 percent of his shots (38-for-59) during that span. His improved play has been critical to St. John’s winning streak, and his confidence is evident in his performances.
One of Richmond’s defining moments came during St. John’s 79-71 overtime win over Xavier. After the Red Storm trailed by 16 in the second half, Richmond made the game-tying basket with 1:03 left in regulation, and his team went on to win in overtime.
Richmond’s 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals in that game helped secure the victory. He was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll following that performance, further solidifying his status as one of the top players in the conference.
Richmond’s Recognition and Future Outlook
Two weeks ago, he was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll after his strong performance in St. John’s comeback victory over Xavier. Richmond’s play has also led to individual honors, including his selection to The Sporting News Midseason All-America Third Team.
Richmond is averaging 12.2 points, 6.0 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game during St. John’s six-game winning streak. He ranks among the top eight in the BIG EAST in both assists and steals per game, and his all-around play has made him one of the most impactful players in the conference.
