Joe Mixon Injury: When Will Texans Star Return To Action And What It Means For Fantasy Players

As Week 5 of the 2025 NFL Season is underway, one big question around the league is, what’s going on with Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon?

Mixon has been dealing with a lingering foot injury that kept him out of last year’s AFC Divisional Playoff game on January 18. He was placed on the non-football injury list in July and remained on it to start the season, forced to miss the first four games of the season.

In the offseason, Texans general manager Nick Caserio said that the team would handle Mixon’s situation on a day-by-day basis. Last week, head coach DeMeco Ryans provided bad news regarding Mixon’s health, stating he may not return to the field this season.

Texans beat writer Aaron Wilson tweeted last Monday:

What Does Joe Mixon’s Injury Mean For Fantasy Owners?

Most fantasy football players most likely avoided drafting Joe Mixon in fantasy before the start of the season, with his foot injury being unclear at the start of the season. Some people though, may have drafted him in the latter rounds, with hopes that he could return as soon as Week 5 and would get back to his normal form.

Mixon has posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, including in his first season with the Texans last year. He’s also rushed for a combined 20 touchdowns in the last two seasons combined. In eight seasons, he’s rushed for 7,428 yard and 60 touchdowns, showing he is one of the best fantasy running backs when healthy.

With Ryan’s latest comment on Mixon’s foot last week, it’s safe to stay fantasy owners should drop him, and lose hope that he will be a top RB choice in fantasy this season.

If Mixon does return this season, he will likely be eased into the backfield rotation and could take awhile to get back to his productive self.
