Ed Cooley’s Georgetown Ends NBA Draft Drought as Two Players Selected in 2025

After 12 years, a player from Georgetown was picked in the NBA draft. Thomas Sorber was picked 15th overall in the first round by the OKC Thunder, the reigning NBA champions. He became the first Hoya drafted in the first round since Otto Porter Jr. in 2013, and the first Georgetown player chosen by the Thunder.

On the second day of the 2025 NBA draft, Micah Peavy became the second player to be drafted from head coach Ed Cooley’s 2025 class. He went 40th overall to the New Orleans Pelicans. The graduate wing averaged 17.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and led the Big East with 2.3 steals per game, while shooting around 40% from the 3-point line.

This way, in just his second year leading the Hoyas, Ed Cooley saw two players selected, snapping a 12-year postseason drought. This draft picks mark a relevance to the once-dominant Georgetown program.

Ed Cooley Was Not Happy After Thomas Sorber Wasn’t Named Big East Freshman of the Year

Thomas Sorber is coming off a dominant freshman season with Georgetown. He averaged 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 2.4 assists per game and was the defensive anchor of the team. While he suffered a foot injury in the middle of the season but he still had enough to bag Big East All-Freshman and All‑Big East Third Team honors.

But seemingly not enough to bag the Big East Freshman of the Year honor. That award went to UConn’s Liam McNeeley, who averaged 14.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

This made head coach Ed Cooley unhappy as he sounded off on the voters and coaches.

“When you lose someone who, in my humble opinion, should have at the bare minimum been the Rookie of the Year, bare minimum should have been the Rookie of the Year in this league, [it’s difficult to overcome],” Cooley said.

“His impact for us takes nothing away from McNeeley. Nothing at all. His impact, the fact that these coaches didn’t recognize that, I pray that that kid comes back [for his sophomore season]. I pray he comes back. He will be the Big East Player of the Year. He will be a first-team All-American. He will be a lottery pick. And we will be cutting nets down next year in this building at this time come Saturday [as Big East Tournament champions]. That’s exactly the way I feel.”

Many believe Sorber’s midseason foot injury swayed votes in McNeely’s way. However, Cooley believes he had enough in the tank to take home the award.
