Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman Shares Bold Vision for Fighting Irish National Title Run

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish frustratingly ended their 2024 campaign, falling 34–23 to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the National Championship game. It wasn’t what they envisioned, but they changed the national narrative about the Fighting Irish.

Can the Irish deliver a top-tier resurgence in 2025 and finally win the national title? Head coach Marcus Freeman certainly thinks so, but first, they must sharpen some key areas.

HC Marcus Freeman Outlines What Notre Dame Must Do To Break Through in College Football Playoff

In a March 21 episode of the “Next Up with Adam Breneman” podcast with analyst Adam Breneman, Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman talked about his journey as head coach of the Fighting Irish and the lessons he’s learned.

But the most crucial takeaway? He provided insight on what it will truly take to bring a national championship back to South Bend. Freeman broke it down into three core priorities: enhance talent, development, and culture.

As Freeman looks to close the gap between contender and champion, his formula begins with upgrading the roster’s overall talent. But his approach isn’t just about five-star recruits; it’s about offering a complete college experience that blends elite football with a top-tier education.

On the field, Notre Dame’s identity remains grounded in physical, front-line dominance. The run game is expected to be a major strength again, led by standout junior RB Jeremiyah Love. After racking up 1,362 total yards and 19 touchdowns in the 2024 season, Love is expected to be the face of the program in 2025.

The offensive line looks like another classic Notre Dame unit: tough, talented, and deep. Rising star Charles Jagusah is projected to be the cornerstone at tackle, joined by veterans like Aamil Wagner and Anthonie Knapp, who will drive the ground attack.

The biggest question is the quarterback. Freeman faces a tough decision between redshirt freshman CJ Carr and redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey; they’re both talented and promising signal-callers.

Notre Dame prepares for another championship push, and talks in South Bend can’t be ignored. Early projections slot the Fighting Irish at No. 5, just behind the Texas Longhorns, Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Georgia Bulldogs. But don’t expect them to stay in the shadows.

Freeman knows it won’t be easy. Still, with a focus on recruiting elite talent, sharpening development, and strengthening team culture, the Irish are closing in on a return to college football’s apex.
