Texas A&M safety Jacoby Mathews should have plenty of suitors to land him in the transfer portal. Could he return home to Louisiana or stay in Texas at another school?

With the transfer portal back open, college football is starting to see a new wave of players hitting the portal and looking for new homes. Texas A&M safety Jacoby Mathews is one of those players who entered the portal on Tuesday, but where will he land for the 2024 season?

Landing Spots for Jacoby Mathews

Mathews was a key member of the Aggies’ defense, making 42 tackles, half a sack, and one interception last season. After completing his sophomore year with Texas A&M, Mathews looks to continue building off his success in his 2023 campaign.

Tulane Green Wave

The last two seasons have been kind for Tulane winning over 10 games, but the Green Wave now will be without their head coach Willie Fritz as he is at Houston. It may be a new coaching staff in place, but Mathews is from the Louisiana area and would be a good veteran presence in the defense. After playing at a high level over the last two seasons, Mathews would be able to dominate AAC offenses.

LSU Tigers

LSU was a contender to get Mathews just a couple of years ago before ultimately joining the Aggies. Transferring would mean Mathews returns home to Louisiana and joins a new-look defense searching for a new identity. Blake Baker takes over as defensive coordinator and needs a player like Mathews to lead the charge for the next two years at safety.

Texas Longhorns

Mathews received an offer from Texas as he picked their old rivals Texas A&M over them. The Longhorns were ranked 10th in the Big 12 last year in pass defense, allowing 240.8 yards per game. They need some reinforcements to help beef up the secondary, and Mathews could be the guy to help.

Florida Gators

The Gators underachieved, winning just five games, and in a similar situation with Texas, Florida was ninth in the SEC in pass defense (226.7). An offer was made to Mathews from Florida for a scholarship before moving past them. A chance to stay in the SEC and compete against his old team could allow him to get some revenge.

Houston Cougars

As mentioned earlier, Willie Fritz has taken over the Cougars’ football program. During Mathews’ recruitment, Fritz offered him a scholarship with Tulane. It would be a good scheme fit for Mathews to join Fritz’s defense and give the Houston defense a heavy hitter in the secondary.
