Who Are Aaliyah Chavez’s Parents? Oklahoma Freshman’s Family Explained

Oklahoma freshman Aaliyah Chavez powered her team to a 103-98 overtime victory against North Carolina State in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Wednesday night. Chavez led Oklahoma in scoring with 33 points, while also registering a new season high, as the Sooners (8-1) won their seventh straight game.

After another captivating performance from the freshman, fans want to know more about her family.

    Who Are Aaliyah Chavez’s Parents?

Aaliyah Chavez was born to Sonny Chavez and Andrea Chavez.

Sonny was a basketball player in high school. He started a training academy, THE LAB CERTIFIED LLC, in Lubbock, Texas, offering group clinics, private training sessions, and drop-in workouts for youth athletes

At the tender age of just 8, Aaliyah wanted to join her academy. Sonny stepped in to become her trainer. Sonny was actually surprised because:

“She couldn’t ride a bike, couldn’t skateboard. She didn’t have an athletic bone in her body.”

Talking about her early stage training, Sonny added:

“Early on, I would take a 3-pound medicine ball, just to teach her how to catch. She was kind of clumsy. She couldn’t catch the ball.”

Despite not having an athletically sharp body, Aaliyah would show up for all of the workouts, and with time, her body aligned with what she wanted. Chavez went on to become a dominant high school player.

“I ended up trying out for an older team and they told me I wasn’t good enough,” Chavez said. “So it kind of motivated me. I was like, ‘Uh-uh. I’m gonna show ’em.’ I just started working and was like, ‘Oh yeah. This is the sport for me.'”

While her father played a major hand in developing Aaliyah Chavez into the player she is today, her mother, Andrea Chavez, often referred to as “Dre,” offered support and encouragement behind the scenes.

Throughout her high school career, Andrea has regularly attended games and celebrated Aaliyah’s basketball career.

Aaliyah’s family also includes a younger sister, Bel’A Buckets, and a brother, Kingston Brumley‑Chavez. Her brother is a multi-sport athlete (football and basketball).
