What Are Dawn Staley, South Carolina Getting In Five-Star Commit Agot Makeer?

South Carolina and head coach Dawn Staley have added a major piece to their future roster, landing five-star wing Agot Makeer from Montverde Academy.

Makeer, rated the No. 4 player in the country by 247Sports, was one of the most sought-after recruits in the 2024 class. She drew interest from 12 programs, including UConn, UCLA, Notre Dame, Duke and North Carolina, before committing to the Gamecocks.

Agot Makeer Brings Competitiveness to South Carolina

Makeer, a 6’1” wing from Ontario, Canada, is the second wing to commit to the Gamecocks in this cycle, joining Ayla McDowell, who signed in November. Makeer’s addition boosts South Carolina into ESPN’s top 25 recruiting class rankings.

“I know my goals and who I want to be in the future, and I personally feel like South Carolina will get me there,” Makeer said. “The conversations and interactions I’ve had with Coach Staley and the coaching staff have been genuine from the very beginning. … Usually on visits and during calls, head coaches will stay out of most of it.”

“Coach Dawn attended every single part of my official visit and was in the lead of a lot of my recruitment.”

Makeer continued to praise Coach Staley with her words, indicating South Carolina’s recent rise to the top of the women’s basketball world as a main reason.

“I expect a competitive environment in every aspect of my life. I’m going to a school that is a front-runner to win back-to-back national championships. Everything I get will be earned, and I am excited to test who I am. I don’t expect it to be easy, but I do expect that I will be challenged in a positive learning environment.”

Makeer’s profile rose during a strong junior season at Crestwood Prep in Toronto. She was a key contributor to Canada’s silver-medal run at the 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup, where she averaged 17.7 points, seven rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

She transferred to Montverde Academy for her senior year, where she averaged 10 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists despite missing time due to injury.

“Agot is an eager learner,” Montverde coach Matt Shewmake told ESPN. “Her curiosity about the game and willingness to be coachable shows up in her incredibly IQ and instinctual play. Couple that with her length and athletic gifts and it makes her one of the most dynamic players in our game.”
