Former Wake Forest Demon Deacons star and current LA Sparks forward Dearica Hamby recently shared her thoughts on her WNBA All-Star snub in 2024. On Friday, Aug. 1, Hamby appeared on WNBA legend Sue Bird’s podcast “Bird’s Eye View.”
Bird asked Hamby how she felt after being left out of the WNBA All-Star Game despite having the statistical averages to back up her claim. Hamby said she saw the snub as a way for her to rest and recover, but did admit that there was a bit of sadness towards it.
“ I can rest. I mean, obviously, you still feel a little bit away, just like the principle of it, like ‘I should have been one,’ but also understand we weren’t playing well at the time. My numbers are my numbers, but usually when you’re a bad team, you take one,” Hamby said (via the Bird’s Eye View’s Instagram handle).
“And Kelsey (Plum), rightfully has also had a great year, but I think I, anytime I face a little bit of adversity, I’ve always come back harder. So, definitely, I’m excited to see the second half of the season,” she added.

Hamby and the Sparks currently have an 11-15 overall record and are the sixth seed in the Western Conference. The 31-year-old is currently averaging 17.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.7 steals. Hamby played for Wake Forest from 2011 to 2015 during her college basketball days.
Dearica Hamby addresses her sudden string of standout outings in the 2025 WNBA season
On the same podcast, Sue Bird asked Dearica Hamby to weigh in on her sudden surge of note-worthy games that forced the basketball world to debate whether or not she should’ve been an All-Star.
For Hamby, it’s a mix of both being well-rested and proving her true strengths to the league.
“ I think a little bit of both, and also think just getting confident and comfortable in the system, and yeah, we’re learning from each other. It’s brand new, and I think we always talk about the analytics of things, like we’re really good offensively. And, I don’t think our record is like an indication of how good we are and can be,” she said.
“And so, I think just being more comfortable and adding KP’s a big piece and having to learn to play with her again in a sense. So we’re just flowing right now,” Hamby concluded.
