When UConn HC Geno Auriemma Poked Fun at Kim Mulkey’s Flashy Fits

Aside from being the head coach of the LSU Tigers, Kim Mulkey is a fashion icon too. It’s evident from her colorful and glamorous courtside fits on the side-ines, which truly set her apart from her peers and counterparts.

Mulkey shared the stage with UConn Huskies HC Geno Auriemma last year, where she talked about her love for dressing up nice and perfect.

“I’ve always liked to dress nice. I think as a professional, That’s our boardroom when we walk on that court. And you’re not going to walk into a boardroom with stockholders and people with flip-flops on and warm-ups on,” she said.(49:20)

Kim Mulkey even shared how she has been continuing this practice since her assistant coaching days. Sharing a true story, Mulkey talked about how a boutique owner in Baton Rogue gave her assistant fits with sparkles on them. At first, coach Mulkey was hesitant to wear something like that but eventually gave in. After wearing the sparkly jacket for just one game, it caught on to her and got “outrageously crazy.”

Coach Mulkey also revealed how her fits have also been a reason for the game ‘growing.’ Though there are many season ticket holders at LSU, not everyone is interested in watching the hoops. Some attend the games just to watch what Mulkey is wearing! She added:

“Ain’t that a hell of a note? But we took their money and we sold them season tickets, and their kids run around there. So I guess you could say I took one for the team.”

While Kim Mulkey described her obsession for ‘nice’ and perfect fits, Geno Auriemma kept quietly listening, with a smile on his face. When the interviewer asked him if he ever considered “sparkles” to be added to be to his fit, he wittily replied:

“Not Outwardly. I’m not there yet.”

Coach Kim Mulkey gives Geno Auriemma his flowers

Coach Kim Mulkey knows how to praise anyone, especially when they have the stature of Geno Auriemma. A pioneer of women’s basketball, Auriemma has led the Huskies to 12 NCAA Division I championships since 1985.

Mulkey recognized the contributions of the veteran coach and drew a striking comparison of him to UConn’s men’s basketball team coach, Dan Hurley.

“If Connecticut had big-time football, this son of a gun would be making more money than Hurley — and anyone else in the men’s game — as he should. He deserves it. Eleven [national titles]. And for him to stay committed to one institution for as long as he has? Kudos to Geno,” Mulkey said in the aforementioned interaction. (36:18)

Adding further, Kim Mulkey compared herself and Auriemma as “two dinosaurs.” In her coaching career, Mulkey has faced Auriemma 11 times, including twice in the NCAA Final Four during her stint as Baylor’s head coach.
